Niles 2040 Comprehensive Plan
The Village of Niles has started the engagement process to update its Comprehensive Plan to help guide the future actions of the community. Niles 2040 will guide the future development, improvement and preservation of the community. The present time has shown us that the way we live, work, shop, connect, and recreate is constantly evolving. People have new expectations and aspirations for the places they call home. We want to make Niles the best it can be now and into the future.
The Niles 2040 Comprehensive Plan will explore how the Village can better understand and address these changing times, such as a radically changed retail environment; transportation mobility innovations; an aging population; evolving housing preferences; changing work and commuting habits; and an increased focus on environmental issues and sustainability. The Village is strategically pursuing a planning process to anticipate these changes and harness opportunity to create a resilient, well-designed, livable community that represents the aspirations and values of its residents. Imagine a confident, vibrant, beautiful post pandemic Niles that families want to move into
We have a self confidence issue. It shows in how we hang faded plastic flowers on Milwaukee ave every summer. We should start by doing simple makeovers that show we matter and we are worth it. Let’s start by removing fake plastic hanging flowers in the summer. Hang real flowers or don’t hang the fake ones at all. Incentivize storefronts to clean up and care for their immediate surroundings - removing weeds, planting real flowers. Attract small family owned businesses, coffee shops and restaurants. Plan for post pandemic and incentivize them to take on risks now. I envision Niles to be more walkable, bike-able and an attractive place for families to buy home as post pandemic office workers will be commuting less, working from home more and will look for vibrant/livable/walkable/bikeable communities with access to nature and things to do locally.

Cleanup the United Transmission Eyesore
The transmission store has been closed for close to 20 years now. The windows are broken and the place is falling down. The Village should declare eminent domain and seize it from the owners.

I would love to see Golf Mill developed into a business district like Rosemont has set up.
Restaurants, bowling alleys, comedy club, and live entertainment. I feel it would bring great revenue to our wonderful Niles community.

Renew Milwaukee Ave empty buildings: craft brewers, vintage and/or antique shops with groups of vendors, Etsy-type small businesses.
See what works in downtown Naperville, etc.

Redevelop the old Sears store into 4 or 5 stores under one roof (both floors) as they’re doing with Carson’s at Harlem/Irving.
Redevelop closed Sears Store in Golf Mill to incorporate 4 or 5 stores under one roof.
